Where do I go?

Tuesday, February 21st, 2006

It was just brought to my attention that some people might wonder what the difference is between your college career services office and the main university career services office. Well, I am here to give you the answer. Everything goes through the main office in 360 Student Union and they are the office who coordinates the big events and finds employeers who want to hire OSU graduates. A few of the services they offer include: Job Listings, Career Fairs, On-Campus Interviews, Résumé Referral, Mock Interview Days, and a helpful web site for students. For more individualized attention students are directed to the career services office for their particular college where the following services are offered: Résumé Development/Critiques, Job Search Strategies, Internship Information, Career Exploration, Job Search Correspondence and Individualized Career Advice. This is only a partial list of things that career services can help you with, to find out the rest visit your college career services office.

A good thing to know

Today I was browsing around and found several jobs to apply too which was exciting. One thing I noticed was that many of them said to attach a resume, well that is not a problem right, or is it? When most people see the word “attach,” they attach the needed file within an e-mail, however that is really not always the best way to go. Many companies and organizations will not open attachments from just anyone. Be sure to find out what they mean by attach, do they mean in an e-mail or just paste it into the body of the message. Fortunately for me, the HR director at the company I was applying to was nice enough to inform me of this, just remember that this may not always be the case so the best thing to do is do it right the first time!

Busy, Busy

Tuesday, February 7th, 2006

Well, today was a very busy day at work. There are some major changes going on in our office. Missy has left to become the interim director for Career Services and Michelle has left on maternity leave, so that just leaves Libby and I. The good news is that a got my own desk area with actual “walls” and a very nice computer. It is also now my responsibility to handle all walk-in appointments. This is all fine by me because it allows me to help even more students which I love doing! So if you don’t schedule your appointment online, I am the one you will be seeing when you come into the office. Even though all this was going on today, I was still able to stumble across a great website. This is a very useful job search engine because it combines all the jobs across the internet into one site. Therefore, this site has listings from Monster and Careerbuilder as well. This site is easy to navigate and it allows you to search certain geographic areas as well, which is very important to some. If you have some time check out http://www.indeed.com/ and let me know what you think.
