Good News!

Thursday, April 13th, 2006

Well, I got an interview with ITT-Tech Career Services in Richardson, TX. I am very excited because this is something I really want to do. I have been keeping in contact with the hiring director since February so hopefully that will help me get my foot in the door. I have already answered some screening questions and now I am going for a face to face interview. I am going to take some of the materials with me that I have developed while working for Career Services so I can show some examples of my work. And………….another good thing happened today too! We got a nice little house in east Plano and I can have a dog there so I am really excited about that. I am going to start moving right after graduation, because they asked me when I could start working and I figure the middle of the month is about right. What an exciting day, I can’t wait to see what happens.

The Search Continues….

Tuesday, March 21st, 2006

Well, the job search is continuing but I am getting some things worked out. I have applied to several jobs over the past few weeks and I have heard back from only a few. The funny thing is that even though I am getting my degree in Public Relations, I have applied to very very few jobs that are directely related to that field. The good thing about PR is that it is useful in almost any type of job setting, so in a way I guess I am going to be using my PR skills. Anyway, I have applied to several jobs in career services. I decided that is what I really like to do, so as of right now that is the type of jobs I am interested in. I will be living in the Dallas area, which is good because they have alot of colleges down there I can apply too. However, I have been talking with the career services director at ITT-Tech in Richardson and I just got another email from him today that said do not take a job anywhere else until I talk to him. That makes me feel good and from helping students find jobs in the past in this type of situation, if employers want you to work for them that bad, they are willing to pay top dollar for you. So, I guess we will just have to see how this all works out, it would probably be a good thing for me to start working a smaller school and work my way up to a bigger university.

A good thing to know

Thursday, February 16th, 2006

Today I was browsing around and found several jobs to apply too which was exciting. One thing I noticed was that many of them said to attach a resume, well that is not a problem right, or is it? When most people see the word “attach,” they attach the needed file within an e-mail, however that is really not always the best way to go. Many companies and organizations will not open attachments from just anyone. Be sure to find out what they mean by attach, do they mean in an e-mail or just paste it into the body of the message. Fortunately for me, the HR director at the company I was applying to was nice enough to inform me of this, just remember that this may not always be the case so the best thing to do is do it right the first time!

Busy, Busy

Tuesday, February 7th, 2006

Well, today was a very busy day at work. There are some major changes going on in our office. Missy has left to become the interim director for Career Services and Michelle has left on maternity leave, so that just leaves Libby and I. The good news is that a got my own desk area with actual “walls” and a very nice computer. It is also now my responsibility to handle all walk-in appointments. This is all fine by me because it allows me to help even more students which I love doing! So if you don’t schedule your appointment online, I am the one you will be seeing when you come into the office. Even though all this was going on today, I was still able to stumble across a great website. This is a very useful job search engine because it combines all the jobs across the internet into one site. Therefore, this site has listings from Monster and Careerbuilder as well. This site is easy to navigate and it allows you to search certain geographic areas as well, which is very important to some. If you have some time check out http://www.indeed.com/ and let me know what you think.

So far, so good

Monday, January 30th, 2006

Well I applied for some jobs this weekend and that actually takes longer than you might think. However, the best news came just a few minutes ago. I applied for a job online and before I even received a confirmation email letting me know my application was received the man in charge of hiring was emailing me back. Apparently, if I wasn’t still in college I could have had a job right now. Although I couldn’t accept the job right away he told me to be sure and check back with him around graduation time because he was very interested in my past experiences in Public Relations. He told me I was the most qualified of any of the applicants he had seen thus far. To me this is very encouraging and lets me know I am on the right track. I just wanted to share this with everyone and let you know that I will be posting some information on the upcoming career fair very soon.

Annie’s Job Search

Monday, January 23rd, 2006

I have decided that in my blog I am going to talk about my search for the perfect job. I think this is a very fitting topic since I will be graduating in May and am currently looking for my ideal job.

This blog will also be relevant to other students in the class who are seniors looking for jobs or maybe just looking for internships. I am going to discuss topics like resumes and cover letters and how to interview to the best of your ability. This will also be a place for others to ask questions concerning job search strategies. I am also going post links with useful information relating to job search strategies and career planning.

I am employeed by Arts & Sciences Career Services so I will try to provide useful links and information on this blog. I hope this blog will help other students with questions and you can also follow me along my job search with this blog.
