Shopping Fun!

This one is for the ladies.

I thought today that I would talk about shopping in Kuwait and Shopping in America. The reason behind this choice is the fact that I was just in OKC, shopping with one of my friends, and I thought that this would be a very interesting topic to discuss.

Kuwait as I’m sure I have mentioned before is a country where the central religion is Islam. Islam is a religion that prohibits alcohol and any liquids or drugs that make you loose your inhibitions, so partying and drinking are not one of our past times such as here in the U.S. What do we do then, you might ask, if we don’t drink and go to parties? We go shopping and we make going out an event.

To break away from our daily routine that we are used to having during the week, we plan our weekends events really well and we make sure that we have a good time. People in Kuwait don’t go out to restaurants just to eat, like people do here. We go to restaurants to be with our friends and family and we mostly go for the atmosphere. So we dress up, I mean really dress up, with full make up and high heels and everything, and we go out. Going to the malls is the same also. We go to the mall to walk around, sit in a cafe, maybe buy a few things, but most importantly we go to just look at the crowds and enjoy the atmosphere.

When we really are in need of new clothes and don’t have time to mess around, we go with our mothers. You know how moms are? They get right to the point, except when you take them shopping for dishes, at least that’s the case with my mom. Another thing about shopping and malls in Kuwait is the types of stores that we have and the types of stores here. I’ve always found this to be a struggle. In the U.S. people dress very casually and comfort is the most important thing when looking for an outfit. In Kuwait, style is the most important thing, and even our causal outfits are too dressy for going out in the U.S.

Here in the U.S. people always seem to be on the run, always in a hurry like something is behind them. People here rarely take the time to sort of absorb what is around them and just enjoy where they are in life or their surroundings, and they are way too apologetic for nothing. The pace of life is just much faster here, than in Kuwait. But I guess that is a good thing, because in my opinion, that is why the U.S. is a developed country that is one of the strongest countries in the world, and Kuwait is still considered a third world country.
