Sports Fever
Hello Bloggers and Sports fans a like,
I was reading some of my blogs recently and I realized that one of the topics that we did not go into on my site is the topic of sports. I think that sports and the love for sports are one of the only things that can translate internationally. Well, no. That’s not true. Money is the only thing that can translate internationally, but sports is also still important.
Heat in Kuwait is the main reason that a lot of sports cannot be practiced and why it is some times really difficult to practice the sports that we do have. But none the less, Kuwait is a very active country when it comes to sports and it offers its citizens many resources for recreation.
I know that in Kuwait, the most popular sport is soccer, which we call football, as does the rest of the world. If you ever come and visit Kuwait do not be surprised when you pass by a street in a neighborhood and find a bunch of kids playing soccer in the alleys. There are even these huge lots that people play soccer in. Fathers would get together and play there with their sons or some times they would just play separately. Separation also comes in other forms when it comes to the sport of football. In Kuwait we have certain teams that are associated with certain ares in Kuwait, sort of like England’s Manchester United Team. These teams that are from different parts of the country all compete to get a title and people in Kuwait who are fans are also divided based on the teams they like. The rivalry can really get tough. I remember in school other girls used to ask me which team I support and when I said none, they would try to sway me towards their team. It was so bad that these teams and the support for them became associated with religious sectors of Islam. That was because one of the location of the each team’s main club site. One team’s club was located in an area mostly populated by Shiite people and the other by Sunnis. Any way I am off topic here, but I thought it would interesting for you to know just how big of a sport football is in Kuwait.
There are other activities that people can do as well. We have lots of health clubs and sports clubs that people can join to form teams and be involved in the sport that they want. Of course because of the location of Kuwait and the constant state of heat that we are in, we love to practice lots of water sports such as diving- which is actually what people in the past in Kuwait used to make their living from, that is before oil was discovered. Other water sports also include jet skiing, Equestrian activities, bowling, ice-skating, basketball, and many others. I even believe that there is a new project to build a golf course in Kuwait… We’ll see.
Sincerely,
Dalal
