Humanae Vitae

In 1968, Pope Paul VI issued the papal encyclical Humanae Vitae. In this encyclical the Holy Father expounded the Church’s stand on artificial birth control. The pronouncement was quite a shock to many people of the time that thought the Church would allow some use of artificial contraception.

Abortion and artificial contraception are two current issues in the Church. Actually, they aren’t “issues” at all–the Church has always had the same teachings. The “issues” are with society.

It was in the 1930s (at the Anglican Lambeth Conference) that major protestant churches began to accept policies of artificial birth control. Since then, most protestant lines have accepted this as a way of life.

Unfortunately, this is a slippery slope; for abortion and artificial contraception come from the same mindset and are in the same vein. So as we see the acceptance of contraception rise, we also witness the gradual destruction of the family and increase in the number of abortions.

We see what happens when those in authority give way to the desires of the world. Thanks be to God for Pope Paul VI and for the teaching magisterium. Selfishness is contraception. Selfishness is abortion.
