The Music Business Organization

I am in my capstone Public Relations class right now called PR Campaigns. As a semester project we were to choose an organization/business that we wanted to do a campaign for. My group chose the MBO (Music Business Organization). This campus organization is still a baby on campus considering it just started up last semester and is still developing it’s backbone within the Oklahoma State University and Stillwater community. For our campaign we are launching a type of ad campaign. Since most people have yet to hear about this group we have made it our job, as the purpose of our project, to launch a massive advertising effort for them, or at least to teach them how to do just that themselves.

To give you some background on this wonderfully unique opportunity it was started up last year by former student Nick Ley. He has since graduated and handed the organization over. This multifaceted organization is in place to bring music to the city of Stillwater and knowledge of the business to its members. Since the town we live in is only an hour away from two major cities (Tulsa and Oklahoma City/Norman) it is a prime stop from bands touring the region. In theory it should be a no brainer for bands passing through Oklahoma to stop by and play here, especially considering the vast college student market this town would provide them. In spite of this, no body stops here. This is something the MBO hopes to change.

The group also wants to teach its members about the different aspects of the music business as well as give them hands-on experience. It is there to be a networking tool and a resume builder. The Ley created in organization with asperations of bringing in speakers from all walks of the organization, be it from promotions to artist management to A&R. Don’t know what any of these are? That is the point of the organization, to teach you and open your eyes to the different opportunities within the Music Business field.

So this is the organization we are covering. Hopefully by the end of the semester we would have devised a fool proof plan for getting the word out there about the MBO. But hey, I guess I’m one step further now anyways. All of you who just read my post can now say, “The MBO? Yeah. I’ve heard of them!” Now go tell your friends :)
