Oklahoma Spring Break

Tuesday, February 28th, 2006

Spring Break is only a little more than a week away for most Oklahoma college students and high schoolers.

I imagine that everyone will be staying in the state to take part in many of the extremely interesting things to do in this state. I’m sure no one will be leaving to deposit their tourist dollars anywhere else except in their great homeland.

Oklahomans Are Getting Truly Inked

Tuesday, February 28th, 2006

I picked up a copy of the Daily Oklahoman yesterday, which is rare because I already had toliet paper. One of the stories caught my eye.

As some of you may know, giving tattoos is illegal in Oklahoma. Oklahoma is unique because it is the only state in the union that bans the giving of tattoos.

Oklahoma History 101

Friday, February 24th, 2006

Everyone knows Oklahoma is the cultural desert of the United States. But did you know that Oklahoma was once considered part of the Great American Desert?

Before the United States acquired the real deserts in what is now Arizona, New Mexico, Nevada and California, the land that would become Oklahoma, Kansas, and Colorado were seen as the Great American Desert by people east of the Mississippi River.

Oh yeah, My Dodge is a Terrorist Target!

Wednesday, February 22nd, 2006

After September 11th, 2001, a lot of people in every state were afraid of terrorist attacks.

Everyone was keeping their eyes peeled from their own front porches when a person with even the slightest tint to their skin crossed the street.

Their heart rates would jump when they saw an individual with a dark colored beard in line with them at the supermarket.

Ditch the Weather

Tuesday, February 21st, 2006

Oklahomans know weather here can change on a whim.

Most recently, it went from pleasant, which is rare in this state, to cold in about a day.

Thursday was, for the most part, a nice, cool day. That is, until the sun went down.

Thursday night was so cold I had to put on my touk to walk to class.

About Page Update

Thursday, February 16th, 2006

The “About. . .” page has been updated.  I have organized all of the categories under the blog section.

This is supposed to help people find the topic they’re interested in and read about the particular issue they want.

Their are currently five categories, but you can expect several more.

Also, I have linked all of the categories to the “About. . .” page for easier navigation.

So check back frequently for more updates to see which categories have been added and what they’re all about.

If you have any ideas about a future category or future post, send me a comment and I’ll look into making it a part of the Oklahoma Sucks category family.

I Disagree With What You’re Saying, But . . .

Tuesday, February 14th, 2006

Last November, my mom threw a Bunko party where her and a bunch of friends sat around the house and drank. This is not an evening that I, nor my sisters or dad wanted to be around for.

We went to an Italian restaurant on the north side of Oklahoma City for dinner. My dad and I became engrossed in conversation and, for what was probably the first time ever, we agreed on something.

My dad is a conservative, gun owning, war supporter. I’m an almost communist, secular humanist pacifist. So what could we possibly agree on?

Introducing A New Page!

Saturday, February 11th, 2006

It’s been up for a few days, but the new “Oklahoma Landmark of the Month” page is ready.

Check back every month or so to see what the next featured landmark is.

Oklahoma has several special places that make it unique.  Some for good reasons and some for not so good reasons.

Currently, January’s place of interest has been chosen and February’s is being decided.

What are the criteria to be recogized for this wonderful honor?

Well, basically, it’s whatever I want.

January’s was chosen because it has been in the news recently and it seemed fitting to grant this accolade to OSU’s Boone Pickens Stadium.

Dangerous Oklahoma Law

Friday, February 10th, 2006

If you’re an Oklahoma college student studying journalism, than you’re probably aware of Oklahoma’s ag disparagement laws.

In 1995, Oklahoma joined 13 other states in passing a statute that is intended to protect one of our biggest industries.

The laws allow for agricultural producers to receive damages when their product is disparaged.
