Kevin Smith’s first notable movie Clerks, was filmed in black and white because of low budget. The movie that proved immensely popular had a production cost of less than $30 thousand. Compared to the amount of most hit movies this is amazing. The film not only experienced immense popularity when it was first introduced, but also a huge following when it was released again for its tenth anniversary. Clerks X included the original directors cut of the film. This movie started the career of the popular drug dealing duo, Jay and Silent Bob.
Jay and Silent Bob are not the only people that Kevin Smith started their careers. Ben Affleck had only one notable movie before his appearance in Mallrats. His first notable movie was Dazed and Confused. However, his first major part in a movie was Mallrats. Jason Lee (My Name is Earl) also started his career with Mallrats. Kevin Smith has worked with other notable actors as Matt Damon, Jeremy London, Shannen Doherty, Stan Lee, Liv Tyler, and Jennifer Lopez to name a few.
I have yet to find a Kevin Smith movie I have not enjoyed. Most of the films build upon the last. However, each one can be watched on its own. It just makes the movies a little more enjoyable when you realize the connections between all of the movies. I sincerely think that everyone should watch at least one Kevin Smith movie. If you are only going to watch one, watch Chasing Amy. This was Kevin Smith’s favorite up until his sequel of Clerks witch has not been released as of yet.
