Top Five Scary Movies

spooky.jpg When I say the top five scary movies I am talking about my favorites. This is a list of five scary movies that I think everyone that enjoys the occasional scary movie should see. These may not actually be my all time favorite scary movies, but they do make the list.

Number 5

1982 Poltergeist

If your looking for a movie about a family being haunted by spirits in their home this is the movie for you. The writing credits for this film go to Steven Speilberg. This is also a good film for those that enjoy Speilberg. It has been many years since I saw this movie, but I remember being frightened the first time I saw this movie. This should be on the “to do” list of everyone that enjoys a good scary movie.

Number 4

1984, A Nightmare on Elm Street

This is probably my favorite Wes Craven movie. Wes Craven is one of the most famous horror movie directors. Most Wes Craven directed movies are a bit on the campy side of horror. A Nightmare on Elm Street is no exception to that rule. That is part of the reason I think this movie is great. The villain of this little film is no other than the notorious Freddy Kruegor. I think Freddy is probably one of the most well-known movie villains. As an added bonus to this movie, the opening credits list a very famous upcoming actor. If you watch the opening credits you will see introducing Johnny Depp. This movie is also good for those that would like to see how Johnny Depp started in the movie industry. This is just a fun scary movie.

Number 3

1960, Psycho

Psycho is one of the most well-known Alfred Hitchcock movie. Alfred Hitchcock is known as the master of suspense for his movies. Psycho is one of the best scary suspenseful movies I have ever seen. I could have talked about Hitchcock’s The Birds as the most suspenseful, but I personally prefer Psycho. I would explain more about this film, but I think it is something everyone should watch for themselves. It is the classic film of suspense.

Number 2

2002, 28 Days Later

This movie is tied for my favorite Zombie movie. The other, Shaun of the Dead, is a comedy. The interesting thing about these two movies is that they are both British movies. The movie 28 Days Later takes the regular zombie movie and changes it some. In the movie, the people that are zombies have contracted a disease called rage. A man wakes up at a hospital after being unconscious for 28 days. He finds the world has completely changed. There is no one to be found. He finally encounters a priest that is affected by the rage. This is how the main character learns about the fait of England. An interesting thing to note is that at the end of Shaun of the Dead there is a small joke about the zombies not really contracting the rage disease. I found that part amusing. For a good zombie movie 28 Days Later is the best.

Number 1

1973, The Exorcist

I picked this movie as my number one scary movie, because it was the first movie I saw that really frightened me. I think part of the reason this movie frightened me was because I had heard stories that it was based on a true story of a little boy. After hearing the stories of the boy, the movie was hard to watch for me. I also first watched it alone at night. I wouldn’t recommend doing this the first time of viewing this movie. The movie is about a little girl that gets possessed with a demon. At first her mother takes her to different doctors trying to cure the weird behavior the girl is exhibiting. When this does not work a priest is brought in to exorcise the demon from the girl. Many weird and scary things happen to the girl as the priest tries to save her. This is the scariest movie I have seen. Many would disagree with me saying different movies, such as The Ring (Ringu) is scarier, but I stick with my conclusion. This is why The Exorcist is my number one scary movie.
