Why Greek? We make better grades.
Tuesday, January 31st, 2006Alright, I know this is a little long but this is a press release from last year about the Oklahoma State Greek system. Many times, the Greek system is stuck with the stereotype that alcohol is the number one Greek priority. I am posting this press release to show that grades are the top priority for Greek students.
Academics proved to be a top priority for OSU greeks for the second semester in a row. Gamma Sigma Alpha, a national greek promotion organization, recently awarded OSU Greek Life the Midwest region’s Gamma Sigma Alpha National Greek GPA award for the 2004 fall semester.
“This award gives the greek community a chance to show the nation that we are committed to excellence,” said Interfraternity Council President Chris Parker.
The award compares the greeks’ grade point average to non-greek students’ GPA at OSU. The difference is then compared to the rest of the universities in the region, and the school with the greatest difference receives the award.
Many greek houses have rules within their chapters for minimum grade requirements. Mandatory study hours are also another part of many houses’ academic plans in Greek Life.
“There is no system-wide grade criteria, but Interfraternity Council does have a minimum GPA of 2.65 and any fraternity not meeting this is placed on restrictions,” Gregory said.
