Why Greek? We make better grades.

Tuesday, January 31st, 2006

Alright, I know this is a little long but this is a press release from last year about the Oklahoma State Greek system. Many times, the Greek system is stuck with the stereotype that alcohol is the number one Greek priority. I am posting this press release to show that grades are the top priority for Greek students.

Academics proved to be a top priority for OSU greeks for the second semester in a row. Gamma Sigma Alpha, a national greek promotion organization, recently awarded OSU Greek Life the Midwest region’s Gamma Sigma Alpha National Greek GPA award for the 2004 fall semester.

“This award gives the greek community a chance to show the nation that we are committed to excellence,” said Interfraternity Council President Chris Parker.

The award compares the greeks’ grade point average to non-greek students’ GPA at OSU. The difference is then compared to the rest of the universities in the region, and the school with the greatest difference receives the award.

Many greek houses have rules within their chapters for minimum grade requirements. Mandatory study hours are also another part of many houses’ academic plans in Greek Life.

“There is no system-wide grade criteria, but Interfraternity Council does have a minimum GPA of 2.65 and any fraternity not meeting this is placed on restrictions,” Gregory said.

Rich Kid or Just Normal

So there are many stereotypes to the Oklahoma Greek system. The first stereotype I will love to tackle is that Greek are little rich kids so I am going to link you to my farternity’s Web site. On this Web site, you will be a ble to view Greeks who are just as normal and just as poor as any other student. Just because you are Greek does not mean you have money. Check out Phi Dleta Theta

The Oklahoma Greek System

I have thought very deeply about the subject I will further discuss through the duration of this class. First, I must chose a subject I know enough information to cover an entire semester. Second, I want a subject people will disagree with my views. My blog subject is the Oklahoma State Greek system. I will have certain hot topics each week to discuss. First, my topics will cover the different Greek stereotypes, especially the ones in the media. From stereotypes, I will discuss subjects about Greek’s involvement in homecoming to campus involvement. I encourage anyone to freely write their opinion about how they feel, think or perceive Greeks at Oklahoma State.
