Old School

Monday, April 24th, 2006

Old School is a movie about three guys about in their 30’s who seem to be on the verge of a mid life crisis and somehow start an off campus fraternity. As the story progresses, the dean of the university wants to take over Mitch’s newly rented home, one of the founders of the fraternity, and kick off the fraternity for all the binge drinking, party throwing, and streaking chaos they cause.

This movie does not give fraternity life a horrible reputation like National Lampoon’s Animal House. At times, some parts poke fun at Greek life hazing. For example, all future new members have to tie a rope around the end of their penis and threw a cinder block of a building. Good thing, the rope is long enough to make it to the ground. This kind of hazing would never make it an university campus, unless they wanted their charter pulled by the next day.

There is a few parts in the movie that promote Greek life in a positive favor. The fraternity unites together to fight the Dean to stay on campus. They sacrifice their own time and energy to help each member of the fraternity through a series of tests. The movie actually shows a fraternity uniting as brothers in order to help each other out to stay on campus. Unlike Animal House, the fraternity is not kicked off campus. They are welcomed by the student body and not seen as trouble makers.

John Belushi

In the movie Animal House, Bluto, played by John Belushi, is the “obnoxious ring leader of all the crazy antics and hi-jinks of the Animal House’s Delta Fraternity.” Bluto plays a key role that is very humorous in the movie. However, the character Bluto helps give fraternity men a negative stereotype. In this post, I will describe some of the pranks Bluto pulled and briefly describe why they’re a negative stereotype.

  1. Bluto grabs a ladder and spies into a sorority’s window. Great, now fraternity men are coined as perverts.
  2. Bluto is upset, so he downs a entire of bottle of Jack Daniels in a matter of ten seconds. Great, now we are raging alcoholics.
  3. Bluto steals the mid semester final so the entire Delta house can cheat on an exam. Great, now we have to cheat on test to make good grades.

In the movie, Bluto pulls many more stunts such as killing a horse in the dean’s office to helping wreck the entire homecoming parade. Bluto actions help enforce that fraternity men only came to college to party.

Animal House

Animal House is one of my favorite movies of all time. However, it gives fraterinty life a bad repuatation.

The movie starts off with two young college students who wish to join a fraternity, this is called rush. As the students go through rush, they struggle to find a house to pledge until they come across the Delta fraternity.  For the most part, Delta is the only fraternity who would rush these young men.  The Delta is a loud extreme party house that just plain out suck in academics. They tear apart their fraternity home, cheat on tests, kill a horse in the dean’s office, ruin the homecoming parade and spy on naked girls.  This is how fraternity life is portrayed in the movie.
