Final chapter is the time for the seniors to share stories of their college career, say good bye to good friends and tell how Phi Delta Theta has made an impact on their life.   Last night, I shared laughs with my fraternity brothers and tears while we said our good byes to each other.  I cannot even imagine how emotional I will get during my final chapter.  However, this is what fraternity life is truly about. It is about developing bonds with friends that will last a life time.

I know through my fraternity experience I have developed a group of friends who will always be there for me.  I know that no matter how hard life may get that I will always have a friend to help pick me up.  When I rushed, I was told that my pledge brothers would become my best friends for life.  However, I never really understood how true that statement was until I said my goodbyes to many of pledge brothers.

The Men of Phi Delta Theta are firm believers in providing time and energy which directly benefits our University and the ctiy of Stillwater. During any given year, Phi Delta Theta takes part in more than 20 philanthropic activities.  We take pride in supporting our community and take it seriously.

With many different events we take participation, our annual House of Treats is an annual favorite.  On Halloween night, the chapter house doors are open to the community providing a fun, safe and friendly place for more than 500 families to enjoy Halloween.  The event has grown over the last four years making a significant and positive impact on our community and its children.

Also, Phi Delta Theta hosts a camp sponsored by Big Brothers and Big Sisters, sponsors a local elementary class, and raises money for cause like “Relay for Life.”  Our philanthorpy involvement is a simple indication of our commitment to build an organization that our university, community and our members can be proud of.

When we decide to take part in an activity, we don’t accept mediocrity.  This drive and determination to succeed is largely responsible for the fact that the director of Orange Peel (the nation’s 2nd largest student run organization) for the past two years was A Phi Delts. Also, the executive directors for Camp Cowboy for 2005 were Phi Delts.

The fact that the directors of two of the largest organizations on campus are members of Phi Delta Theta says a lot about what direction we are going in.  These honors exemplify what we strive for as a fraternity. Excellence.

Please feel free to learn more about the organizations our leaders run:

From billiards to football, there is definitely something for everyone and Phi Delta Theta takes part in every competition.  Along with the All-Mens competition, we are also a dominate force in the Co-Rec competitions.  We have placed top three, in the All-mens competition, for the last seven years.  As Phi Delts, we like to give our 110 percent and will always remain fiercely competitive.  Intramurals are team spirited competitions and our members consistently step up to bring home pride, achievements and trophies.

One of the greatest parts of being in a fraternity is the relationships developed between  members.  At Phi Delta Theta, our bond is strong. We share joy and sadness, victory and defeat, opportunities and adversity, but above all, we share our brother hood.  This brother hood has been built upon a foundation of more than 150 years and continues to grow each day.  Phi Delta Theta is about growth, personal development and being apart of a unique family.

These are the guys who are going to be the ones I call if I ever need help or the guys who will be my best men in my weeding.

I almost did not sign a fraternity when I came up to school at Oklahoma State University. Today, I look at signing my fraternity as one of the smartest decision that I have ever made in life.  In my fraternity, I have shared the good times and the bad times with my brothers. I have celebrated with my brothers when they accomplished something great and I have cried with them when times were rough. My fraternity brothers are my best friends.

I am going to take the next few blogs to tell a little about my fraternity as if you were a rushee.  Please feel free to learn more about PHI DELTA THETA.

It is cheaper to live in a fraternity. http://www.jb3623.site/students/seagle/2006/04/24/it-is-cheaper-to-live-in-a-fraternity/ http://www.jb3623.site/students/seagle/2006/04/24/it-is-cheaper-to-live-in-a-fraternity/#comments Tue, 25 Apr 2006 05:53:20 +0000 Scott Eagle Greeks on Campus http://www.jb3623.site/students/seagle/2006/04/24/it-is-cheaper-to-live-in-a-fraternity/ Fraternity members are know as spoil rich kids who run to their parents whenever they need money. However, this stereotype is far from true.

At Oklahoma State University, fraternity members are no just as normal as any other student on campus. If a student wanted to save money on his college career, he would find it cheaper to live in a fraternity house compared to living in university housing.

According to a study conducted on March 2003 by Oklahoma State, it cost fraternity members who lived in fraternal housing less than those who lived in residential living. For room and board, it cost the average fraternity members $54 less per month and $800 less per year than those in residential living. However, this is the average out of 19 fraternities and each house cost will vary depending on the house.

If a student wanted to save money, he could join a fraternity. For me, I know many Greek students who are on financial aid and scrap pay check to pay check.

However, Hammontree probably never thought that joining a fraternity would cause his death.

On September 30, 2004, Hammontree was announced dead due to alcohol poisoning. Furthermore, his death was the result of peer pressure his fraternity placed upon him during a fraternal ritual.

It was big bro night. A time that members take a little brother, a pledge, under their wings to be a mentor during college and pledgeship. This should be a time for brotherhood; however, for the OU fraternity, it was a time to influence young pledges to drink a liter of liquor.

This is an annual event that allows the opportunity for upcoming future Greek members to visit “Oklahoma State University and see what fraternity and sorority life is all about! High school juniors and seniors and their parents can meet members of the OSU Greek community and learn more about the recruitment process, the benefits of Greek membership and all that’s great about “going Greek.” Current non-Greek OSU students also are welcome (Oklahoma State University Office of Fraternity and Sorority Affairs).”

Once Again, Greek Discovery Day broke record numbers with more than 700 potential new members attending the event. These students are broken into two groups when arriving to the campus, men and women. The men tour around the campus and visit the fraternities houses. The women are allowed the same opportunity with the sororities. After tours, students are given the chance to return to houses for dinners hosted by each individual house. These dinners allow upcoming students the chance to better meet the members of the houses.

Old School http://www.jb3623.site/students/seagle/2006/04/24/old-school/ http://www.jb3623.site/students/seagle/2006/04/24/old-school/#comments Mon, 24 Apr 2006 21:01:24 +0000 Scott Eagle Greeks in the Cinema http://www.jb3623.site/students/seagle/2006/04/24/old-school/ Old School is a movie about three guys about in their 30’s who seem to be on the verge of a mid life crisis and somehow start an off campus fraternity. As the story progresses, the dean of the university wants to take over Mitch’s newly rented home, one of the founders of the fraternity, and kick off the fraternity for all the binge drinking, party throwing, and streaking chaos they cause.

This movie does not give fraternity life a horrible reputation like National Lampoon’s Animal House. At times, some parts poke fun at Greek life hazing. For example, all future new members have to tie a rope around the end of their penis and threw a cinder block of a building. Good thing, the rope is long enough to make it to the ground. This kind of hazing would never make it an university campus, unless they wanted their charter pulled by the next day.

There is a few parts in the movie that promote Greek life in a positive favor. The fraternity unites together to fight the Dean to stay on campus. They sacrifice their own time and energy to help each member of the fraternity through a series of tests. The movie actually shows a fraternity uniting as brothers in order to help each other out to stay on campus. Unlike Animal House, the fraternity is not kicked off campus. They are welcomed by the student body and not seen as trouble makers.
