And so I go

November 28th, 2006

6_elliot.jpgWith graduation this semester for me, I leave you with a poem I wrote about endings and new beginnings:

And so I go

Left with nothing more to do

But become that which I was to become

You may be there

You may be done

You may have just started

But when it’s all done

Remember to have fun

Be grateful for each day, for those you know, for those you love

And if you’re lucky

In return God will bless you

And so I go

This ain’t yer grandaddy’s country

November 28th, 2006

spp_200.gifI bet you remember the first time your parents took you to see a fireworks show or a military parade. They, like their teachers, taught us to respect the country, the flag and the brave men and women fighting to protect freedom. But those days are numbered. The good ole’ U.S. flag, with its signature 50 stars and 13 bars, may very well become obsolete under a North American Union. Or is it just a security and prosperity perimeter?

President Bush: our new king

November 22nd, 2006

bush_halo3.jpgHands down, President Bush is the greatest president in the history of the United States. Immediately, critics argue he is the worst. Where is their foresight? The problem remains they have yet to read the history books of tomorrow, which state George W. Bush is the new forefather of this nation’s new american century. Published this summer on facebook.com were my recommendations for Bush to follow through on by the end of the year. Let’s see how he did.

‘Kramer’ stirs racial tensions nationwide

November 21st, 2006

kramer-laugh.jpg

The former co-star of Seinfeld went off on a few black people in the audience this past week. Richards made an apology on Late Night with David Letterman to salvage his reputation among the drive-by media. Comedian Sinbad responded on CNN to say he doesn’t accept the apology. The owner of the Laugh Factory, where Richards unleashed his offensive speech, said Richards was scheduled to apologize the next night, but the apology did not come and now he is banned from performing at the Laugh Factory until the African American community approves. “…a chance encounter with a book…”

November 9th, 2006

intrep.jpgThis phrase from “Little Acorns,” a song by The White Stripes, describes a way to solve overwhelming problems. My book is the 1972 edition of “Intepretative Reporting,” an instruction guide for reporters by Curtis D. MacDougall, the proclaimed creator of the reporting style for which the book is named. The New York Times published an informative obituary after his death in 1985. I found the book sitting atop a shelf in the archive room at The Daily O’Collegian. I asked Jack Lancaster, my adviser, about it. He said he read the book many times and it taught it everything he knows. I’m sure he learned more than only what the book provides, but it certainly is great material for a book older than I am!

Colbert leads the conservative revolution

November 7th, 2006

colbert1.jpgOne year ago, not one person, from the media to the White House, could have predicted Stephen Colbert, the former Daily Show correspondant, would become the next generation of mainstream conservative.

“I’m a neo-neoconservative,” Colbert said on his show to William Kristol, a self-proclaimed neoconservative and editor of The Project for the New American Century.
Little did media pundits, political anaylists, social comedians and arm-chair commentators know this humble South Carolina drama student could stand before the president and speak the truth about the liberal media, staying the course and leading from the gut.

Catch the truthiness on Comedy Central, Monday through Thursday at 11:30 p.m. Eastern/10:30 p.m. Central.
