You may notice that I declared the end of my project a few posts ago. That was a mistake. Shortly after writing that, I found out that each one of my links was not a seperate post. That is why I wrote the extra posts after my first “End of My Project” post. I apologize for the confusion.
I finally have plans for Christmas break. My friends and I will be going to Wolf Creek, Colorado to go snowboarding. I was afraid that we had waited too long to make plans to go anywhere near Colorado, but it turns out that one of my roomate’s aunt has a condo she is willing to let us stay in. This will be a well-needed break from Stillwater since I haven’t been away since July. This is too long to stay in Stillwater without an extended break. None of us have been to Wolf Creek, but we hear that it is pretty good and that it usually has good snow. It is also only a short drive from Durango, home to many microbreweries. That is probably the most exciting part of the trip. If anybody knows anythign about this area, especially Wolf Creek, let me know. It would be nice to have some traveling tips before I leave.
Our Oklahoma State Cowboys lost their fourth game in on the last play this past Saturday. This capped off when of the most frustrating regular seasons in recent memory. It is so hard to go through ever game knowing that there is a chance of pulling out a win, only to have that hope ruined by a last second mistake. I wanted so badly to beat OU at home this year. It was my senior year and now I will have to wait two more years to see them play again in Stillwater. Not only did we lose to them at home, but it gave them a shot at the Big 12 Championship. The last thing anybody wants is to see them playing for any type of trophy. Hopefully, we will at least win our bowl game, wherever it is.
Towers of London are a new punk band from London. When I say punk, I mean punk. Everybody in the band has adopted Tourette as a last name. They harken back to the real days of punk. Days when the Sex Pistols and the Ramones ruled the world. If you go to their site you will see the endless videos they have taken of them touring, playing and beating up hecklers. Not only are they real punk, but they are good at it. They are not your “pop-punk” band. They are no Blink 182 or Good Charlotte. You can check them out for youself here.
Tonight will be my last post for the semester. Hopefully, I will be able to continue writing on this site, and hopefully you will still be able to read it. This semester has been pretty interesting. I have never done anything online like this and have learned quite a lot. Maybe I will be able to continue writing about music and other things of interest. Last Saturday night I found myself uncharacteristically staying home. I had a long day at work and late night that Friday. I ended up watching a documentary that followed Kiefer Sutherland as he went on tour with a guitar player and his band. That guitar player ended up being Rocco and his band, The Burden. I was pleasantly surprised. Rocco can straight play the guitar. It is as simple as that. He seems to be a throwback to the golden years of blues and actual rock and roll. I have an affinity for that old school slide sound. It just seems right to me. I can listen to slide-guitar all day. That is why I like the Allman Brothers so much, and that is one of the reasons I have grown to love Rocco. The documentary aside, I don’t know if I would ever have gotten a chance to discover this band. Their album, “I Trust You To Kill Me,” is out now. You can listen to a few tracks on their Myspace site. I especially like, “Colorful” and “Soul”. Check him out, and if you get a chance, the documentary isn’t that bad either.
Why is it that it seems almost all of the good, new rock bands are coming out of Europe and not America? The Kooks, Arctic Monkeys, Kaiser Chiefs, and Muse are just a few of the amazing new bands coming out of England. It is hard to name very many good American rock bands that don’t sound like some sort of corporate creation. Seether, Puddle of Mud, Theory of a Deadman, Nickleback (Canadians count) are all chart-leading bands in America.
Why is America not producing bands with substance anymore? There are few good bands coming out. The Killers, Kings of Leon and The Strokes are all great, but even they haven’t realized the success that some of these lame “corporate rock” bands have. These new American bands all sound like they have Scott Stap singing for them. They are as cookie cutter as the boy bands that unfortunately ruled the 90s. (more…)
Some music is just epic. “Bohemian Rhapsody” was epic. “November Rain” was epic. Just as the songs could be described as epic, so can Muse’s “Knights of Cydonia”. It is one of those songs that has layers and layers and seems to last forever, in a good way. It sounds like music for the soundtrack of a Final Fantasy video game, or a crazy sword filled action or sci-fi film. This is the case with a lot of Muse’s songs. Most of them are based on a simple backing rhythm guitar, but all seem to build until they explode with an intense guitar solo. Their music just seems to be so intense and purposeful that the listener can’t help but be into it. If you haven’t yet listened to Muse, they have music posted on their Myspace site as well as their official site, www.muse.mu.
I am officially getting old. Last night was my twenty-second birthday. It was a glorious night filled with friends, libations and good old-fashioned debauchery. I actually woke up today with a cue ball in my pocket. Sorry, to whichever bar it belongs to. It does fit nicely with the eight ball from my twenty-first birthday. Maybe I will have a whole set by the time I am done. Now I can look forward to graduating and becoming a real-life working man, or spending three more years in law school.
I found out three weeks ago that I have been wrong for months. I was under the impression that I was graduating next fall. I had planned everything around this idea. I haven’t looked for a job or anything. You could imagine my surprise when I found out the other day that I will be graduating this May. This was good and bad. I was happy that I would actually be getting out of here in four years, which will save me a lot of money. It was bad because I haven’t made any plans. This leads me to one of the biggest decisions of my life, law school. (more…)
