In addition to the last post where I put a link to the Murder Ink story, I thought I would post here a story I did back in April on tattoos. It is sort of a student reaction Features piece on the passage of Senate Bill 806. I just thought the students’ points of views might be interesting.

Here is the link to the story I wrote that ran yesterday in the O’Colly, if anyone is interested in knowing more about the shop…

I just got back from a trip overseas to see my grandfather for his birthday, and I just wanted to share a piece of advice…it’s much easier to go through the security check in an airport if you take out any and all of your piercings beforehand….otherwise, you end up holding up a line and pissing a bunch of people off! I know, it should have been common sense, but that’s what happens when you have a flight at 5 in the morning and you’re barely awake.

This tattoo parlor is located at 224 S. Main St., between Cooper Bicycle and Cooper Locksmith. The owners/operators are native Stillwaterians Bert Kaiser and Tony Forsythe, the not-so-famous former graffiti artist. It’s not open yet, because of licensing and insurance issues and setbacks, but Tony says it should be open soon. I have an article about Murder Ink set to come out in the O’Colly on the day that it opens, so you can find out more information by reading that. I’ll post a link on here when it comes out.

Many of you have probably driven down Knoblock on the southeast side of campus by the Campus Fire Station and noticed the tattoo shop right across the street from it, College Ink Tattoo. I noticed it the day it opened, the Friday of Walkaround, Oct. 20, while I was riding by my bike past it. Linsey has already mentioned it in one of her posts a few weeks ago.
Subsequently, I wondered what made College Ink so special that it was able to open before tattooing was even considered officially legal in Oklahoma. Also, there is a law prohibiting tattoo shops from being within 1,000 feet of a school, church or playground, and the shop is closer than that to all three (OSU, a church a block over and the YMCA playground). So, I decided to do some research, along with a news package assignment for JB 3153 (A/V Production) on the shop.
But before I talk about that, just a little tidbit of information I have GOT to throw out there: the two artists we interviewed for our news package were named Matt Noghabai and, get this: “Butcher.” That is his actual last name. He wouldn’t tell us his first. Seemed like a really nice guy, though. I wouldn’t mind getting a tattoo done by him. Read the rest of this entry »

I got an e-mail today that came pretty close to breaking my heart. Gooding, one of my favorite non-mainstream indie bands and one of the most entertaining acts to watch (EVER), will be no more. The group is playing a couple of last shows on November 24 and 25 in Wichita, Kan., their hometown. The e-mail gave no explanation as to why Gooding, Billy Driver and Jesse Reichenberger won’t be playing together anymore, and it seems sort of strange that they would break up less than half a year after the release of their latest CD, “Tiny Heart Attacks.” The e-mail, which was from band manager Keith Clingman, made one thing perfectly clear, though: this is not just a hiatus, it is a final farewell. And if that’s so, Gooding will be sorely missed by many people.

In my search for Oklahoma tattoo shop links on the Web, I recently stumbled upon a Web site called inkednation.com. As far as I can tell, it’s like a Myspace network for tattoo artists and enthusiasts. There are profiles of people as well as shops, and people can post or swap pictures of their prized ink. It’s free, like Myspace, but as far as I can tell there aren’t so many ads to get in the way. It looks like a pretty cool site.

I recently created a new group on Facebook dedicated to people who are interested in body art. It’s named Tattoo OSU. Right now, there are about 10 members. Hopefully that number will grow. I’m interested in possibly taking or getting pictures of students’ tattoos to post on this page, and I thought that might be the easiest way to get in touch with people to do it.
Also, I was interested to find out how many people either have tattoos or are interested in getting them, so I created the following poll:

This weekend I went to the Festival of Discorus at the Zoo Amphitheatre in Oklahoma City. Bands who played were Dropping Daylight, Halestorm, Evans Blue, Crossfade, Breaking Benjamin, Shinedown, and Seether. I haven’t been to an actual big-name concert in a while (I used to go to them all the time), and the last time I went to the Zoo Amphitheatre was in 2001, to see Korn at Kattfest. I must be getting old, I think I enjoyed myself a lot more back then. Read the rest of this entry »
