Nintendo profit up 72% / Sony down 94%

Friday, October 27th, 2006

Upon the advent of the release of Nintendo’s and Sony’s latest portable systems (Sony’s first, Nintendo’s 5th generation counting their first, which would be Game & Watch systems), many people speculated that Sony would have the upper hand due to the enhanced graphical power (the power of the PlayStation2 in comparison to the N64), superior non-gaming applications built-in abilities (checking the internet is built-in to the PlayStation Portable), and “superior data storage” found within the UMD (Universal Media Disc) capable of holding almost 2GB of data instead of Nintendo’s relatively smaller (in both data storage and in physical dimensions). Some even said that the PSP would crush Nintendo’s handheld and would cause them to even pull out of the portable market for a time. And to all of the people who stated these opinions, This makes me recall the Simpson’s character Nelson Muntz exclaiming “HA HA”.

RUMOR~ EB/GameStop to have Wii kiosks by the end of the week

Tuesday, October 24th, 2006

According to various sources, EB/GameStop retailers should be getting Wii kiosks “very soon”. This not only means that I will finally be able to give a little more depth to the site by giving Hands-on first-hand (both hands) impressions. This news came midday by GameSpot forum poster Yoshi_64. While at EB, a package from UPS arrived and lo and behold it contained various Wii display goods. The manager said that they expect to see the Wii kiosk by the end of the week, or by next week. (in their store, at least)

Smoking Polls

(yes, that was lifted from the Daily Show)

I think its a humorous name, so it’s the title of my first poll.

Which console do you feel will come out on top this generation?

Watching all the fun you aren’t having yet

Tuesday, October 17th, 2006

As a slight update to Wiiblog, though not necessarily an update due to Nintendo not posting more Wii Experience videos, ten Wii Experience videos exist at Nintendo’s Wii site.

Nintendo is lacking a large amount of marketing as of yet, even though they are close to within a month of release. These short videos curtail the initial reaction to playing with the Wii and its unique, intuitive remote control. Watch one of my favorite of the initial the videos, just simply because his reaction seems so genuinely excited.

Mii Wii preorder experience

Tuesday, October 17th, 2006

Friday Morning
1am: Upon hearing rumors of people waiting throughout the night for their slight chance to preorder a Wii piques my interest and makes me curious as to whether people will go through with their plan or whether they were just saying that to startle me into waiting. I slowly drive by EB with a look of relief as I see no one waiting in front of EB and no cars waiting around the area. Having seen this with my own eyes, I decide that it was just talk and go home for a quick rest before coming back in the morning.

7am: I eagerly rise out of bed in what I hoped to be an easy experience heading out to the local Electronics Boutique (EB Games) and reserving one of 20 Wii that will be sent to our local store.

8am: I arrive at EB to find approximately 30-40 people standing in front of the EB that is scheduled to open at 10am. The wait for whether everyone in line is here to get a Wii or not begins.

Gamestop/EB start preorders Friday

Thursday, October 12th, 2006

Friday the 13th will mark the beginning (and most likely end) of Wii preorders at GameStops and Electronics Boutique nationwide. This preorder will allow buyers to set aside a specific amount ($50-$100, the Stillwater employee wasn’t sure) to set aside a Wii system when they are released November 19th.

According to the voice mail I received earlier today, Our local EB will be receiving approximately 20 Wii on launch date, with more to follow with each coming shipment. While this may seem like a minuscule amount, the PLAYSTATION3s Stillwater’s EB will be seeing come launch day (November 17th) is 12 or less.

Although our EB is scheduled to open at 10AM to allow preorders, a few gamers have expressed their concerns of such small amounts of units. One in particular has told me he may end up camping outside to try to stake his place in line. I will hopefully be attending this to see how the preorder situation in Stillwater is handled, as well as to secure my own Wii come launch day.
