Sing, sing a song…
I am pretty big into making themed CD’s. I guess in this day and age of iPods and the like, CD’s have become passe, but I still enjoy them, especially when burning my own. There is a sense of finality to them. You can only pick about 20 songs, and that is it. When you get down to those last few songs and you can only pick one of them, you have to make a decision. Maybe I am making the process much more dramatic than it really is, but I still take it pretty seriously.
Sometimes, I remind myself of John Cusack’s character in High Fidelity. He is obsessed with making “Top Five” lists about everything, including songs, and the movie ends with him speaking to the audience about making the perfect mixed tape.
Anyway, the latest themed CD I have been working on is one with all “sing along” songs. My goal is to put together a CD that I can play in my Jeep, and no matter who is riding with me, nearly everyone will be able to (and want to) sing every song that plays. It’s a stretch, I know, but I think it might be doable.
While compiling the list, I discovered that the songs I was choosing were either classic rock or 90s rock, which is pretty logical when you think about it, especially when considering the generation I am aiming toward. Therefore, I decided to limit the choices to the stuff from the 90s.
Here is the list, so far:
- Under the Bridge - The Red Hot Chili Peppers
- Mr. Jones - Counting Crows
- Santeria - Sublime
- Say it Ain’t So - Weezer
- Santa Monica - Everclear
- Got You Where I Want You - The Flys
- Good Riddance (Time of Your Life) - Green Day
- I’m Gonna Be (500 Miles) - The Proclaimers
- Inside Out - Eve 6
- How’s it Gonna Be - Third Eye Blind
- Sex and Candy - Marcy Playground
- Song 2 - Blur
- Stay - Lisa Loeb
- Self Esteem - The Offspring
- Lithium - Nirvana
- No Rain - Blind Melon
- Name - Goo Goo Dolls
- Don’t Speak - No Doubt
- Cumbersome - Seven Mary Three
- Wonderwall - Oasis
- Brick - Ben Folds Five
- Jack and Diane - John (Cougar?) Mellencamp
- Desperately Wanting - Better than Ezra
- Far Behind - Candlebox
- Lovefool - The Cardigans
- Bullet with Butterfly Wings - The Smashing Pumpkins
- Black - Pearl Jam
- One Week - Barenaked Ladies
- If You Could Only See - Tonic
- Runaround - Blues Traveler
- Jane Says - Janes Addiction
I tried to put them in order of their singalong-ness. Obviously, it is a pretty tough chore.
