Dude, stop wearing girls’ jeans.
Perhaps no word is more overused and less understood than “emo.” These days, just about everything is “emo” according to someone. I will try to give an ever so brief rundown, so people will stop the madness.
Emo started as a movement in the punk and hardcore scene in the 80s and was characterized by, you guessed it, emotionally-driven music, especially in relation to the lyrical content. It has since been divided into several sub-genres by the ever-complicated and pointless arrangement of genre classifications. Frankly, emo isn’t even really around anymore. It has been diluted to the point of nonexistence. By most standards today, a person could argue that just about anything is emo in some way.
Like most other genres, emo is also characterized by a sort of cultural movement. Attitudes and behaviors are “emo.” Emo kids dress a certain way, and they tend to congregate together. And of course, every 15-year-old girl thinks they are emo because their parents don’t understand them and their boyfriend broke up with them three years ago. Boohoo.
So, maybe I just exhibited the broad generalizations that I want others to avoid. Oh well. It’s funny.
Here are some videos I enjoy that are at least somewhat related to this post. They do contain some questionable content…
