Ways to Save $$$

Here I’ve compiled a list of ways to save money for the average college student.

  • Quit buying coffee! If you’re one of the many people who go to the coffee bar first thing in the morning, you’re wasting money. Make it at home! Buy a decent coffee maker or even an espresso machine and you’ll save hundreds of dollars.
  • Don’t think you have to tip all the time. At a restaurant or to a delivery person, sure. But at Sonic or anywhere else? Nah. Sure, they say, “We’re poor college students!” Well, you are too. Keep your money.
  • Skip fast food and late-night takeout. Your waistline will thank you. Stock your apartment or dorm with foods that are quick and convenient, like cereal, bagels, and sandwich fixings. That way, you’ll have less of a need to grab that Big Mac.
  • While you’re in college, “brand name” items should be something that you have no experience with. Suck it up and buy the Great Value brand at Wal-Mart. If you must, go ahead and buy the name brand item once, keep the container it came in, and refill it with the cheap stuff if it will make you feel better about yourself.
  • Go to the matinee showings of movies when you can, and save about half the price.
  • Rent DVDs as a group. Pass the disc along for as long as you can before the due date. Everyone splits the price and watches for a fraction of the cost. (Note: Only do this with responsible friends!)
  • Get your hair cut at a cosmetology school. They charge less for cuts and colors in exchange for the use of your head.
