Techniques and Etudes
Students frequently ask me what music they should purchase. This list is a good starting point. You will notice that along with horn etude books, ther are trumpet and trombone etude books. Trumpet etudes will increase our technical facility on the horn and extend our high range. Trombone etudes will teach us how to read bass clef and are great for learning to play with a great sound in the lower octaves of the horn.
Our role in Wind Ensemble is to be the middle voice of the brass section. If we work on expanding our range in both directions outside of the wind ensemble setting, wwe will not be shocked when we are faced with extreme “high” or “low” notes. We must also be prepared for the extreme ranges found in advanced orchestral and chamber music repertoire. Truthfully, it is more fun to play when we can play every note capable on the horn.
