Friends Like This

Most of us believe that Barry Bonds did steroids. We all know there someone knows about it, but that someone won’t talk. Greg Anderson, personal trainer and friend to bonds, has already served two stints in prison for refusing to testify against Bonds. Now, as he was recently released from prison and charges were filed against Bonds, Anderson released a statement saying that he would never testify against him. That is what I call a friend. There is a saying that a friend bails you out of jail, a best friends is in the cell with you. That is what Anderson is, a best friends. i just wonder, what would be if Michael Vick had friends like that.

Old Favre v. New Favre

On Thursday, the 10-1 Dallas Cowboys will host the 10-1 Packers. There is more in common in this game than just the records. They both have good defenses, but they also have the same quarterback. Tony Romo, the Cowboys quarterback plays like Favre did earlier in his career in the fact that he is elusive and is a gunslinger. They are #1 and #2 respectively in passing yards in the NFC and there are so many similarities between the two that, without the jerseys, you would not be able to tell who is who. So, as the game is played, sit back and look at the present Brett Favre and the future Favre, because they are both great to watch and very likable.

Peterson Plays Powerfully

How about Adrian Peterson, the best young running back I have ever seen? Not only did he run for 200+ yards in two of his first eight games and lead the NFL in rushing, but one of those games broke the single game rushing record at 296 yards. There were many out there that questioned his durability and ability to stay healthy. I know he has been out the past two games with a knee injury after being tackled in a manner that would injure most players. But he is expected to play next week and rest assure, he is going out there to prove that he is the best young back in the league and wants to be considered as one of the best all time after all is said and done.

Nebraska Needs Tradition Back

There is no mistaking that when the Nebraska Cornhuskers were winning they had two things going for them, they pounded the ball down your throat and they had the best defense. This has all gone away and they recently released their coach Bill Callahan after a couple of poor seasons. They say they want a coach That understands their tradition and history… Of defense and pounding the ball I am guessing. Here is a coach for you, how about Bill Cowher. All he did in Pittsburgh was run the ball and stuff other offenses. This sounds to me like the history and tradition of Nebraska football. I know it is a long-shot, but why not go after the coach that may be very well the best available coach out there in many years.

Bears Are Not Very Smart

I just want to take this time to congratulate the Chicago Bears for making another bad decision. Not only do they not have a person to throw the ball, but this past offseason they got rid of the only good thing that was going good for them on offense in Thomas Jones. They instead chose to go with Cedric Benson, the fourth overall pick and their “rushing future.” This team survived last season with the powerful defense and a running back that gave them their only offensive yards. Now they have lost the offensive yards and their defense is on the field so much they are tired by the second quarter. Cheers to you Bears, maybe next season they will sign Ryan Leaf to a long term contract.

Kobe Wants Out

There are many of you out there thinking that the reason Kobe Bryant wants out of Los Angeles is because he is selfish. That may very well be true. As in, he is selfish in the fact that he wants more titles. He stayed in L.A. because he was promised a chance to win more championships, which has not happened. They have provided Kwame Brown and Smoosh Parker, who is no longer there. That doesn’t sound like a supporting cast built to win. The did get Lamar Odom, who was a great player in Miami, but when he got to L.A., he left his courage there. He seems to be afraid to drive to the basket now and with his talent, that is a shame. So, for those that think he is just selfish, look at what they have given him and ask your self if you would want to be there too.

NFL Playoffs

For years all I have heard is how the NFL playoff system is wrong. It is one that the first team that scores wins and I guess people think it is unfair. Here is where those people are wrong. There is a reason you are in the NFL, you are the best of the best. The defense is out there because they are supposed to be able to stop the offense and the same is true for the offense. It shouldn’t matter who has the ball first, if you do your job, you should be able to beat the opponent across from you. In college, there is a lot more disparity, that is why both have a chance to score and win. So, for those of you that do not like the NFL playoff system, stick to watching college ball because I think it is right the way it is.

Deer Season

Another deer season has come and will be gone soon and one thing is certain, this sport is bigger than ever. With each year more and more deer are checked in, helping control the population and providing for the family. I do have a problem this year though. In Oklahoma, using all three weapons, bow, black powder and rifle, the buck limit was dropped to two while five does are available per person (including special antlerless days). This is all in order to control the deer population but how about another solution. There are many out there that like to hunt just bucks and do not waste their time with a doe. Why not set the limit to six deer a season, but in order to take a buck, one has to first check in a doe. This ensures that the doe are being controlled and allows for people to also take the buck they thrive for. With this, all will be happy and the population can be controlled with much more effectiveness.

Best Rivalry

i recently took a poll on ESPN asking the question, “What is the best rivalry in sports?” Of course I voted for Red Sox v. Yankees. But then i started to think. Has this game always been the best rivalry? Was is all that big when the Yankees were terrible in the 80’s were were losing every season? There is a certain criteria that has to be met. There has to be a history behind the rivalry or much at stake. Of course there is the Sox/Yanks. There is also the Ohio State v. Michigan game, that is normally a deciding factor who plays in the Rose Bowl and possibly the National Championship. There was also the The Oklahoma v. Nebraska game in the 70’s, which would also decide, at times, who would play for the national Championship. Dodgers V. Giants, Cardinals v. Cubs and Cowboys v. 49ers in the 90’s.

The thing is that these rivalries change in importance in eras. Each one becomes big when both teams are good. No one wants to see the Sooners kill the Cornhuskers anymore, which was also split into two year intervals when the Big 12 formed. in order for this to apply, we have to be interested in the game and the teams. Now, it is the Sox/Yanks, but in a few years there is no telling who it is going to be. Hell, West Virginia v. Louisville has started to become a big game for the fact that both teams have started to win. So as there is a certain one now, one never knows, in a couple of years, it could be the Raiders v. Dolphins or the Devil Rays v. Orioles.

Brady Is Ruining It All

Brett Favre is having the season of dreams. After people were calling for him to retire after a poor season last season, he has come back for his 17th season and putting up MVP type numbers. Not only is he breaking records for a career, he is throwing for 300 yards every game is seams like and they are 8-1. The only problem is Tom Brady.

Brady is putting up numbers that have never been seen before and he is raining all over Favre’s parade. For Favre, it is their season that movies and classics are made of, it is John Elway at the end of his career, possibly without the Super Bowls. But here comes that glory hog Tom Brady, ruining the story that most Americans have been hoping for the all-American boy in Favre. Thanks TOM!!!
