Casino Royale (2006)
Overall Rank- 2nd
I realize it may seem that I am choosing my favorite films based on those that came out during my generation; however, I would be quick to point out that my top films earned their place.
Casino Royale would likely be my new favorite film were I not afraid of alienating older Bond fans by choosing the newest Bond film as my favorite.
To begin I would like to say that I expected greatness from Daniel Craig from the moment he was announced for the part. While some fan blogs were whining about his blond hair and making other stupid accusations, I was busy writing about the potential for greatness Craig showed. After viewing the film on opening day, I left smiling, knowing I had been right in my prediction that Craig is the best Bond actor since Sean Connery.
While the film has some issues (use of cell phones in an adaptation supposed to take place in the 1950s), they can be overlooked for the simple fact that Craig is the closest any actor has come to the Bond of Ian Fleming’s novels. While I will not discuss the novels on this site, I will say that if anyone reads them and then watches Casino Royale they will likely agree that Craig portrays the Bond of the novels wonderfully.
One complaint people had was that there were no gadgets in this film. In the book of the same title, Bond relies on his wits and skills to survive, not fun toys. While gadgets are an enjoyable part of any Bond film, this one does great without them.
The other excellent feature of this portrayal of Bond is that he appears human throughout. From nearly dying after being poisoned to surviving a very intense torture, this film (and novel) shows the human side of Bond.
Another wonderful aspect is that this is the film based on the very first novel. In it Bond first falls for a girl. He first realizes he looks good in a tuxedo. He also searches for the perfect drink to complement his lifestyle.
While half of the movie is spent at a card table (due to the plot) the boredom associated with this is broken up frequently with scenes of intense action.
This is also the only Bond movie thus far to have a sequel made from it. Quantum of Solace coming in November of 2008 will be a continuation of this film. If Craig is anything like the Bond he portrays here, Bond fans everywhere are in for a wonderful treat. I highly recommend this film.
